Learning a second language can be difficult...but soo rewarding! The best way to learn a language is to be immersed in the country that is specific to that language.

When Edelweiss Tours did research on High School Language Tours, we found we had to do things differently.  Most foreign language tours for high school students are just site-seeing tours and nothing else.  They are shown the exact same things a normal tour would see.

We knew we had to create something that was more than just a standard tour.  Most High School Students are excited to use their language skills they had learned throughout the school year. They lack the opportunity to use their language skills if they go on a standard tour.  The reason being, they are not fully immersed with the native people, they are too busy being shuttled from one tourist sight to the next, and from hotel to another.

This was not how we wanted our tour to be operated.  Instead of going from one hotel to the next we have placed our high school students, along with their adult supervision, in their very own apartments for an entire week.  They will be living with the locals of the country and not in a hotel geared for tourists.  This gives the students a better feel of how the locals live.

We set up teaching scenarios customized by their own high school instructor.  We use our surroundings as a classroom and expect the students to participate.  Nothing too overwhelming, but definitely fun!  Some of the scenarios we include; grocery shopping, ordering food at a restaurant, purchasing train tickets, asking for directions, etc.

Something that is also unique to our tour is the accessibility to local Swiss people.  At two of our four dinners we will have a local Swiss couple join us for dinner, this gives the students a chance to use their German and gain a deeper insight of the Swiss German people.  This has been one of our favorite parts of the tour, watching the interaction among the locals and the student is amazing.  It gives them so much more knowledge about the country, language, and culture they could never find in a classroom setting.

The high school tour follows the itinerary of the normal tour but will be supplemented with daily teaching experiences.

Do not send your students on a basic "sightseeing" tour for high school students! Send them on an Edelweiss tour, where they will gain knowledge into the German language and rub elbows with the locals.
